Huawei Mate Xs 2 launch China

The Huawei Mate Xs 2 folding phone will be launched in Malaysia on 19

Huawei recently introduced the Mate Xs 2, just one year after its last folding form factor. Although only available in China at the moment, this will soon change as the new model is launched worldwide on May 18.

A day later, the folding facility will head straight to Malaysia in what we expect to be the next big trip brand in our market. According to the trailers published online by Huawei Malaysia, two more P50 and nova Y70 phones will join the Malaysian launch of Mate Xs 2.

At the same time, a large number of wearable devices will debut here, including the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro, Watch Fit 2, Watch Kids 4 Pro and FreeBuds SE. The trailer also mentioned Band 7 along with Watch D, which has a built-in blood pressure monitor, and we had the honor of trying it out in action earlier this week.

Mate Xs 2 marked Huawei’s return to the external folding design that the company used in the original Mate X in 2019, as well as in its successor, Mate Xs from 2020. If you remember, the company opted for last year’s Mate X 2 internal folding a design that is similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Huawei claimed that the mechanism of the double rotor hinge in its new Mate Xs 2 leaves no visible folds, which is a bold statement that we would certainly like to see for ourselves. Once deployed, the device provides 7.8-inch display space via an OLED screen that has a native resolution of 2480 x 2200, a refresh rate of 120 Hz and supports the Huawei M-Pen 2s stylus.

When folded, the display would shrink to a 6.5-inch screen with a resolution of 2480 x 1176. Mate Xs 2 with pre-installed Harmony OS 2 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G processor and is complemented by 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage.

When it comes to photography, the Mate Xs 2 relies on a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultra-wide camera and an 8MP telephoto lens along with a 10.7MP selfie camera. However, for those who were so used to seeing the Leica name on Huawei devices, this does not apply to the Mate Xs 2.

As for the battery, it depends on the relevant variant of the folding phone, such as the Mate Xs 2 with 8 GB RAM has a 4600 mAh battery, while the more powerful 12 GB RAM Collector’s Edition model comes with a 4880 mAh battery. Despite these differences, the maximum charging speed for both variants is still 66W.

Naturally, the Malaysian price of the device is likely to be announced during launch on May 19, but if you need a comparison, the Mate Xs 2 has a starting price of CNY 9,999 in China. That’s about 6,478 RM, which is pretty sturdy, so be prepared if you plan to get it in your hands as soon as the new folding machine arrives at our market.
