Sadio Mane revealed that he was “really close” to Manchester United’s signature before joining their bitter rival Liverpool in 2016.
Mane agreed on terms with the Red Devils and received a contract from the club before withdrawing from the contract after speaking with Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp.
The Senegalese official said Klopp had helped convince him that the Merseyside club was the best destination for him when he wanted to advance from Southampton.
Sadio Mane revealed that he was “really close” to Manchester United’s signing in 2016
In an interview with Jamie Carragher for The Telegraph Mane, he said: “I have to say I was really close to leaving for United United. I had a contract there. I had it all arranged.
“Everything was ready, but instead I thought, ‘No, I want to go to Liverpool.’
‘I was watching the TV. It was an action movie – because I love movies – and he said, “Sadio, listen, I want to explain to you what happened in Dortmund.”
“It occurred to him then to sign me to Dortmund, and for some reason it didn’t work out. He tried to explain and I said, “It’s okay, it happened.” I forgave him.

Mane also revealed how Klopp wanted to sign him when he was manager in Dortmund
“Then he said, ‘I want you in Liverpool now.’ And I said, ‘All right, Dortmund is behind us.
He said, “We have a big project in Liverpool and I want you to be a part of it.” Then he asked what position I wanted because he saw that I was playing on the right and left in Southampton.
“I said I preferred the left, and then he said, ‘But Coutinho is on the left!’ So I said, I don’t mind, I’ll play right.
Mane became the club’s third most expensive addition to Andy Carroll and Christian Bentek when he came to Liverpool in 2016 for £ 34 million.
At the time of Mane’s signing, Klopp said: “I have watched Sadio for many years since his impressive performance at the 2012 Olympics, and then I followed his developments in Austria and while he was working in Southampton.
“Since I came here, I’ve talked a lot about it with the staff and I’ve always felt that it could be a very good signature for us. He has a lot of quality, works hard and has a very good goal balance.
Mane said he would reveal his plans for the future after the Champions League final in Liverpool
A report in the German daily Bild indicates that there is a growing belief that he will go to Bayern Munich
“When I talked to him, I could say he was excited to become a member of the club and play for our fantastic fans.” I think they’ll be just as excited to see him wear a Liverpool jersey as I do. ”
Klopp now hopes the Senegalese representative will extend the contract as he prepares to enter the last year of his contract in Liverpool.
However, Mane has so far refused to commit and says he will talk more about his plans after Saturday’s final of the Champions League against Real Madrid in Paris.
He said before the match: “It will definitely be special to win it and get to the seventh (the club wins the European Cup). And I will answer this question (my future) after the Champions League. To stay or not – I will answer after the Champions League. “
Mané was strongly associated with the transfer to Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga giants are said to be willing to pay £ 25 million for its signing this summer.
However, Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah said he would definitely be at Anfield next year
In April or May, Bayern historically found itself in the midst of great transfer stories that came true – for example, when he signed Mats Hummels, Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski of the German rival Borussia Dortmund.
However, the Senegalese national team, who won the African Cup of Nations, Carabao Cup and FA Cup, will also focus on Saturday and will be looking for his fourth big trophy this season.
Meanwhile, Mo Salah has put his future in Liverpool right, revealing that he will stay at Merseyside Club next season.
Salah said, “I’m just focusing on the team. I want to win the Champions League again. I want to see Henda with the trophy again and I hope she will give it to me (pick her up). But I will stay (here) next season, for sure – I will stay next season. ”
Like Mane, Salah has a little over a year to go until the end of his current contract, but he has still agreed on new terms as he seeks a large salary increase after another stellar season.
