IPL 2022 witnessed the rise of several new faces, but at the same time some large weapons failed this season. While Tilak Varma, Ayush Badoni, Umran Malik, and Arshdeep Singh were dizzy, the established pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli failed to set the IPL as hot as usual. Kohli still scored a couple of half a century, but Rohit’s form was a major problem because it was the first time he had failed to score a single fifty in a season. In addition to Rohit and Kohli, another player who faced flak because of his form is Ishan Kishan. The 23-year-old who was the most expensive buy at the IPL 2022 mega auction ₹15.25 crore, he recorded 418 runs in three half-centuries, but was still criticized for not contributing to the team’s success. Ishan was subsequently assigned to the Indian T20I squad for the five-match series against South Africa from the beginning of next month. While some may feel that Ishan’s form is disturbing, former Pakistani captain Rashid Latif feels differently.
“One IPL season plays no role. He is a valuable and useful player. There is no draft or auction factor when playing for India. When a player ₹15 million, all 8 franchises are after him. So you calculate its value. Evaluating runs in an IPL is different. Neither Rohit Sharma nor Virat Kohli scored. Ishan Kishan certainly took a chance because of which he could not perform as well as he would have liked. And that was one big reason why MI was fighting this season, “Latif said on” Caught Behind “on YouTube.
Since Rohit and Kohli rested on the home series and KL Rahul was appointed captain, Ishan’s appointment was useless. All the more so as this is the year of the T20 World Cup and this 23-year-old seems to be an integral part of India’s plans for the ICC.
