Pharmacy students could begin taking on drug delivery tasks during their clinical internships as part of an ongoing review of pharmacy education and training, Health Education England (HEE) said.

Inclusion in the tariff means that hospital trusts, community pharmacies, general practice and primary care networks providing MPharm placements for at least one week will now receive nationally standardized funding.

He added that the HEE and Pharmacy Schools’ Task and Objectives Group was looking at how undergraduate pharmacy students could move from observing tasks to commissioning them with an appropriate level of supervision to ensure patient safety.

“The initial phase of this work involves agreeing the definitions and attributes of” entrusted professional activities “(EPA) in collaboration with employers’ representatives and then identifying which workplace tasks could be EPA.

“These tasks are expected to include those involved in the safe and legal delivery of drugs, as well as clinical skills and decision-making in all sectors of practice,” he added.

Traineeships will be able to request GBP 5,000 for each 40.8-week traineeship through the tariff, which can be used to cover costs, including teaching hours for staff, trainers and teaching facilities and students such as access to library services.
