Experts reveal what your phone scrolling habits say about your personality


In the digital age, many of us may feel addicted to our phones and sometimes we drive them several times a day.

But now experts have uncovered what your mobile usage could tell you about your personality – from news addicts looking for “control” to “lonely” Instagram users.

British expert Tamara Sears of the British Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) explained that while many people browse our phones to get information or fill the time, your habits can tell you all about who you are.

She explained: “When it comes to what you use your phone for, or it might be useful to think about how often you use it and for what purpose.

“Do you use it to engage or avoid? Learn or relax? Do you want to connect or disconnect? ”

She added, “Is it just a tool you control, or does it control you?”

On Instagram you mainly go through photos and videos of celebrities

Tamara explained how looking at familiar faces on Instagram could offer someone to turn to if we felt lonely.

She said: ‘The Cebrites can be something for us, a familiar face that we think we know when we are lonely, or a kind of life that we would like to imitate, or a role model that we would like to learn from.

“They may also be someone who will judge us so that we can strengthen our own low self-esteem, dismiss or condemn this celebrity as inadequate in some way that makes us feel better about us,” she added.

“Constantly focusing on them, however, can create feelings of inadequacy if you are constantly comparing yourself to them, or the illusion of increasing self-confidence if you are constantly ‘elevating’ compared to them.

“No matter how you focus on celebrities, it’s important to ask yourself, ‘What about me by getting that person’s attention?’

“If the constant monitoring of celebrities is knocking you down, then maybe that tells you something. You may have to turn your attention to something more beneficial. ”

You only browse messages on your phone

The expert revealed that if you want to keep an eye on the news, it may mean that you want to feel controlled or talk.

UKCP Transpersonal Psychotherapist John-Paul Davexplained: Using a phone is so widespread and compelling because it meets all three of our basic human needs.

“We can constantly monitor the world of potential problems, which satisfies our need for fear.

“The endless innovation of scrolling and ‘pull snacks’ stimulates part of the reward in our brains in the same way as cocaine.

“For our human connection needs, phones allow its surface form with potentially millions of people around the world.”

Phones have a profound effect on our sleep and can cause serious disruption to our natural body clocks.

He explained, “The blue light from the phone screen actually wakes us up.”

“The resulting disruption of our natural body hours affects metabolism, appetite and mood, reduces melatonin, and thus strengthens sleep.

“With less restorative sleep, we feel more tired and have reduced concentration and concentration the next day.”

According to the UKCP, excessive phone use and dependence on mobile devices have also been shown to be related to:

If you are a jester who is constantly looking for funny content online, it may be a sign that you are putting it off.

“Sometimes when you feel down or angry, memes can be an instant way to smile or laugh, which can be useful, but they can also be used to avoid difficult emotions that would eventually be better faced. , “She added.

Tamara added that thanks to memes, you feel like you belong to the community without actually communicating with people.

“It can be very confirming to know that there are other people out there who think just like you, even if you never meet them,” she said.

“If you’ve never met them, you won’t know if you really want to be associated with that person in the end. Be careful, some memes are evolving from programs that may not match your own, “she added.

If you like to get lost in the digital pages of your e-book, you may be trying to escape real life, Tamara warned.
